Hardscape Lighting
Williamson County, Tennessee
Hardscape lighting illuminates patios, pergolas, retaining walls, steps, and outdoor living spaces — turning the structural elements of an outdoor space into a nighttime design feature rather than an obstacle course. Gemmell Outdoor Lighting designs and installs hardscape lighting for homes in Franklin, Brentwood, and Williamson County, TN. Free design walk. (615) 914-4411.
Your Outdoor Living Investment Deserves to Be Seen at Night
The patio took months to plan and significant investment to build. The pergola was designed specifically for evening entertaining. The retaining wall defines the entire character of the back garden. Hardscape lighting is what makes all of this exist after the sun sets — for you, your family, and every guest you bring outside.
Gemmell Outdoor Lighting integrates lighting into hardscape in two ways: at the design stage (the ideal approach, where conduit runs cleanly before the pavers go down) and as a retrofit into existing hardscape. Either way, the fixture placement is specific to your stone, your wood grain, your riser height — not a stock layout from a box of fixtures. Hardscape lighting is part of most of the systems we build across Williamson County and Greater Nashville, whether the patio is being poured or has been there for twenty years.
Every Hardscape Feature Has a Lighting Solution
Patios & Entertaining Spaces
Ambient lighting that extends your patio's usable hours — warm enough for dinner, bright enough for safety, dimmable for every mood.
Pergolas & Overhead Structures
String light integration, downlights in the beam, or upward grazing on posts — lighting that makes the structure itself feel like part of the design.
Retaining Walls & Steps
Flush step lights, cap lights, and grazing fixtures that make every level change visible and safe while revealing the texture of the stone or timber.

Questions, Answered
How do you light a patio without it feeling like a stadium?
Low and warm, and never overhead. Light the edges and the vertical surfaces (the seat wall, the pergola posts, the steps) and let the table sit in the spill, not under a fixture. Dimming matters more on a patio than anywhere else, because the right level for dinner is nowhere near the right level for clearing up.
Can you light a fence or a garden wall?
Yes. Low fixtures set close to a wood fence graze the boards so the grain reads; a stone or brick wall takes the same treatment at a steeper angle. Fence lighting usually goes in last, and it most changes how big a garden feels at night, because it gives the eye a lit edge to stop at.
